The Serra de Santa Luzia rises to about 550 metres on the right bank of the Lima River, near the city of Viana do Castelo. At the top, overlooking the district capital, stands the imposing Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus - also known as the Temple of Santa Luzia, inspired by the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris and which, since June 2025, also holds the title of basilica – whose construction began in 1904 and was only completed in 1959. In addition to its religious value, the site offers one of the best viewpoints in the region, to the south and west. The mountain range is home to the garranos, a breed of small horses native to the Iberian Peninsula.
