The Montedor Lighthouse stands on the Montedor promontory (in the parish of Carreço), about 8 km north of Viana do Castelo. Designed by engineer José Ribeiro de Almeida, it was inaugurated on 20 March 1910 and is the northernmost lighthouse in Portugal. The granite tower is 28 metres high (103 m above mean sea level) and its three white light beams reach about 40 km. Throughout the 20th century, it was progressively modernised (switching from oil to electricity in 1947 and being automated since 1987). The lighthouse is open to the public every Wednesday afternoon, except on public holidays, and by appointment.
